NORANDINO (Cooperativa Agraria Norandino Ltda), formerly known as CEPICAFE, was founded in March 1995 by 200 farmers of the area of Piura, in the North of Peru. The organization today is grouping almost 7,000 small-scale farmers growing cocoa, coffee and sugar cane in Northern Peru(departments of Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas, San Martìn and Lambayeque). Through the consolidation under the Norandino umbrella, the co-op members have worked collectively to improve product quality, to adopt certified organic practices and to increase their export capacity, besides getting access to financing and development projects. This facilitated the diversification of their activity to include different products, ranging from coffee to cocoa, panela (raw brown sugar), jams, crafts and tourism.

Since some years Norandino has been running a large farmers-managed reforestation program in the Sierra de Piura. The goal of the project is to contribute to mitigate the impacts of climate change by planting every year thousands of trees. Besides the carbon sequestration effect, the new trees improve the soil quality and help restoring the water tables. Through reforestation Norandino can also generate carbon credits, which are used to finance development projects such as technical assistance to the farmers and research on pest control. The program so far has been extremely relevant to improve the livelihoods and the living conditions of the farmers’ communities.
